Cleansing wipes and disposable bathing cloths are essentials in any caregiver’s toolkit.
Cleansing wipes tend to be more compact in size, and are used to clean perineal areas – these wipes for adults typically are Ph neutral or have moisturizers or emollients to preserve fragile skin in sensitive areas.
We divide cleansing wipes into two categories: disposable wipes and flushable wipes. Disposable wipes tend to be stronger (no fingers punching through) but must be disposed into the trash – note that used cleansing wipes in trash receptacles can emit offensive odors.
Flushable wipes are actually DISPERSIBLE wipes– which means these wipes breakdown and disintegrate in the plumbing cycle. Flushable (but not dispersible wipes) are the bane of every municipal sewage system and are actually banned for use in many major cities. Bathing wipes and disposable washcloths are typically larger in size and are ideal for use on immobile patients and loved ones as an alternative to bathing or showering. Washcloths can be used all over the body and are not limited to use in perineal areas only.
